The White Tree, Maria Island is a hand printed reduction linocut in oil inks, on Fabriano Artistico paper.
Near the historic ruins of the Darlington Settlement on Maria Island, Southern Tasmania, there is a small dirt track that follows the coastline. A little way south of the township this track descends towards a bay where a rivulet runs along the inland side of the track. The rivulet forms a chain of still pools reflecting the backdrop of grasses and bushland.
This artwork was inspired by a tree that had grown beside the rivulet, and was surrounded by dead branches that had smoothed and whitened like driftwood. The tree itself had died some time ago, but was still standing, reaching towards the light like a ghost of itself, with the next generation of trees growing up around it.
